Chaithanya, Home for the mentally handicapped children is a "Blessed Home" for the special children and their families. Chaithanya was started as a joint venture of christian centre, Vadavucode, and the Ernakulam YMCA, in 1983 at Vadavucode. It was also in tune with the call of U.N. Assembly which declared the year 1981 as the International year of the mentally disabled. A building having facilities to house 15 children and staff situated on a one-acre plot on a beautiful hilltop at Vadavucode became the starting point of the project.

Later in 1992 the Chaithanya trust was shifted to Thrikkakkara the premises of the YMCA Boys Home. The Home has 24   children of almost equal I.Q. They have improved very much under the loving care of the Matron of the Home. Expenses of food, accomodation and establishment charges, etc. are met by the Y.M.C.A.

Free education is provided to students according to the mental age, aptitude and talents. Our aim is to make the children, self dependent, Functional literacy is the adopted curriculum in Chaithanya.

We are providing facilities to develop their mental skills, aptitude and talents. All boys have developed in their mental, ability, grasping power and other talents. Children were also given special training in different trades. This make our children self dependant when they come out of the home.

The Chaithanya home for the mentally handicapped children testify to the interest of the YMCA for the cause of the poor and the needy. All the children are provided with free food, shelter, clothing and education. Home has a high running expense due to the education and needs of the children. Special children are also given special training in different trades.The full Foster parentship for one child at our home is Rs. 5000 per year.
